Chicago Manual of Style Formatting Guide for Microsoft Word: Footnotes

This guide provides a step by step overview of how to set up documents for Chicago style in Microsoft Word. The guide also reviews the tools available in Microsoft Word and how they might be useful in a student's paper.

Footnotes

Unilike MLA and APA, Chicago Style does not utilize in-text citations. Instead, sources are cited in-text using footnotes. To add footnotes to a document:

  1. Go to the “References” tab.

  2. Place your cursor where you want your footnote to go.
  3. Under  the “References” tab, go to the “Footnotes” section and click “Insert Footnote."

  4. Your footnote will appear at the bottom of the page.

  5. Type in your footnote.
